Frequently asked questions

What are the key things you look for in a project?

A clearly identified problem, a well formulated approach to solving it, the capability of the research team, and support from their organisation.

Do you accept every project presented to you?

No. We apply clear criteria and due diligence to assess projects quickly (12% accepted to date).

Why do you need project endorsers?

Scientists independent of your research not only validate the project and your capability to deliver, but also add an essential element to the profiling and promotion of your project.

Do we have to start with only the Foundation Plan?

No. If you want to combine the two plans from the beginning, you can do so.

Can we move to the Accelerator Plan later?

Yes. You can turn the Accelerator Plan on and off every three months to enhance your profile and accelerate your funding drive.

How much work do you require from us?

Minimal. Our goal is to enable you to focus on science, not on writing funding applications. The approach is simple, and it usually takes hours, not weeks, to complete.

Will we get to see information before it is made public?

All publicity material is approved by you before release to ensure accuracy and protect your reputation and ours.

How is our IP protected?

Any sensitive information, including intellectual property or trade secrets, remains yours to protect. We don't need this information to introduce your project to our network for funding.

How long does it take from preparation to launch?

Typically 4 to 6 weeks, as long as you are available to provide the required information.

How long does it take to get funded?

Timelines vary and funding isn't guaranteed. We market your project globally to targeted funders.

What if we don't get funded?

We guarantee targeted, global promotion, not funding success. Under the Foundation Plan, you pay nothing unless you secure funding.

Where and how do you look for funding?

We work through partners, supporters, global networks, philanthropists, investors, and corporates, finding funders whose goals and motivations align with your project. We consult with you to avoid clashes with your typical funding sources, such as government or grants.

Where don't you go for funding?

We do not approach or knowingly accept funding from any organisation whose money comes from sources contrary to the project's objectives or from immoral or illegal activities.

What's different about your funding searches?

We typically do not apply for grants. We are opening new funding pathways through funders and investors who have previously been reluctant to fund scientific research because they saw it as a bottomless pit or didn't know what results research could achieve with their contribution.

Do you conduct due diligence on funders?

Yes. We assess motivation, source of funds, and reputational fit before partnering.

What if we already have some funding?

That's great! We help fill gaps outside your core grants and open new funding avenues.

Do you require exclusivity?

No. We want to see your project funded, regardless of who introduces the funder.

What if we get funded from another source and no longer need help?

That's great too! We want to see you funded. Just keep us informed. If you secure funding elsewhere, you can cancel the plan, though cancellation fee may apply.

Can we cancel at any time?

Yes, you can cancel at any time. However, if you cancel before the term ends, a cancellation fee may apply to cover the work we have done.

Do you assist with the funder or investor negotiations?

Yes. We steer all discussions to ensure your project is soundly funded and your needs and the funder's needs are well balanced.

What does the funding cover?

It covers the full cost of your project, including operational costs, materials, plant and equipment, and all researchers, whether employed or contracted.

How is overhead handled?

We fund the project and everything needed to deliver it successfully. This can include necessary rent, utilities, and administrative support. However, we do not cover generic overhead that is not directly related to the project.

Is the success fee paid from the funding raised?

Yes, the success fee is added on the project cost and therefore is included in the funding raised.

Can the funding you raise be used for other projects?

No. To protect the funder and your team, the money can only be applied to your project.

How is the money you raise for our project protected?

The funds are stored in an escrow account held by the global CA firm Moore Markhams, and are released for the next phase once we sign off on completion of the previous phase.

Can the funders take back or hold back any of the funds?

No. The full amount is paid into the escrow account on signing the funding agreement.

Can the funders get back the funds if the project is terminated early?

Yes. If a project is terminated early, any unspent funds in the escrow account are returned to the funders. Reasons can include project completion, a change in circumstances, or lack of transparency or demonstrated progress.

Is Science Alliance a charity?

No. We keep the model simple, transparent, and cost-efficient. There are no hidden compliance costs or overheads.
